Microsoftは1月26日(米国時間)、「Changes in metadata service affecting Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player｜Microsoft Support」において、ユーザーからのフィードバックや利用状況を分析した結果、特定のプラットフォームで動作するWindows Media CenterやWindows Media Playerにメタデータの配信を終了すると発表した。
これにより、曲のタイトル、ジャンル、アーティスト、映画の監督、俳優、カバーアート、TVガイドなどの情報が表示されなくなる可能性があるという。

この変更はWindows 8.1、Windows 8、Windows 7で動作するWindows Media Centerが影響を受けるほか、Windows 7で動作するWindows Media Playerが影響を受ける。なお、Windows 10、Windows 8.1、Windows 8で動作するWindows Media Playerは影響を受けないようだ。

Microsoftは、上記のOSにおいてメタデータの配信が行われなくなるだけで、再生やメディアストリーミングなどの機能には影響がないと説明している。また、すでにダウンロード済みのメタデータはそのまま利用できる。
複数のメディアがこうしたMicrosoftの動きを伝えている。例えば、Betanewsの記事「Microsoft cripples Windows Media Player on Windows 7 -- a seemingly dirty tactic to increase Windows 10 upgrades」は、MicrosoftによるWindows 10へのアップグレードを促すための戦術ではないかと指摘している。
Windows 7のサポートはあと1年ほどで終了するが、依然として多くのユーザーがWindows 7を利用しており、サポート終了後も長期にわたってWindows 7のシェアが継続すると見られている。
