米Microsoftは、Windows 7ベースの組み込み用OS「Windows Embedded Standard 2011」(コード名Quebec)のCTP(Community Technology Preview)版を公開した。Microsoft Connect内のWindows Embedded Standardより入手できる。RTM版は、2010年後半頃発表の予定。
Windows Embedded Standard 2011は、またカスタマイズ可能かつコンポーネント化されたフォームで提供され、OEMメーカーは必要なもののみを選択しデバイスを開発可能。Windows 7同様のパフォーマンス、ユーザーエクスペリエンスおよびそれによるデバイスの差別化、組み込み機器とWindows PC/サーバー/各種オンライン サービスと連携したエクスペリエンスの拡張を実現するとしている。
また、Active Directory内グループ ポリシー、Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager、Microsoft Terminal Services、 Windows Server Update Services、VDI(Virtual Desktop Infrastructure)を備えたクライアント/サーバー間の各種機能、および相互運用性の向上を実現。Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol(RDP) 7.0、Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5、またInternet Explorer 8、Windows Media Player 12を搭載するほか、Windows Aero、Windows Flip 3D、Windows Presentation Foundation(WPF)、Windows Touchに対応している。
動作環境としてはx86/x64に対応、スマートパワーマネージメントAPIにより、開発者はCPUのアイドルタイムを改善し、電力消費を抑えたアプリケーションの開発が可能としている。
